High Street Primary, Vale of Glamorgan

The RAISE grant has been used to support the employment of a part-time teacher of drama to teach small groups of targeted pupils from all years in KS2. The aim is to improve pupils’ oracy and self esteem through drama based activities. Evaluations using Teaching Talking assessment tools have shown marked improvements in pupil oracy, while the school has also seen an improvement in KS2 literacy scores.

The school also works closely with the Head of Creative Arts at Barry Comprehensive School to develop transition projects, such as the creation of a DVD based around the theme of Urban Myths. Both schools are convinced of the substantial benefits of the programme, which has also encouraged greater parental participation in school activities.
